Observer Creative Writing Corner: Unbreakable

By Darren Kwan

There’s a certain mystique she possesses when she speaks

Even not in battle, explosions and gunfire replay in her mind

Joined the Marines to avoid a broken family with a roof that leaks

Saw all her friends and family die, both at home and at the front line

She’s seen more sorrow at twenty than most in a lifetime

But she’s strong, she remains forever a soldier

Because she knows her young baby sister is the only lifeline

And suddenly these impossible walls can be climbed

Sometimes all people need is a small beacon of hope

One last breath of pure faith and belief in something

And finally a savior who throws down a long rope

Just enough to stand up and stop stumbling
