RU Donating?

By Benjamin Lioue

In mid-April, the Business Association Supply Chain Expertise (BASE), ALPFA, and Rutgers Financial Planning Association, will be hosting a blood drive in the 3rd floor lounge of the Rutgers Business School at 1 Washington Park. The blood drive is hosted in partnership with the Community Blood Council of New Jersey Incorporated.

The Community Blood Council of New Jersey states in their brochure that “Donating blood helps people who depend on blood and blood products for recovery, such as children and adults with leukemia, cancer, anemia, severe burns, hemophilia, accident victims, surgery patients, premature babies, and cardiac patients.”  An individual donating one pint of blood can essentially save up to 3 lives.

Individuals looking to donate must meet a few requirements. The first is to be between the ages of 17 to 75 (or 16 with parental consent) and weighing at least 120 pounds. The event takes place on Wednesday, April 16th between 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. To schedule an appointment, send an e-mail to Upon confirmation, bring your student ID, eat a healthy meal 4 hours prior to donating and don’t smoke 1 hour prior.

The entire donation process takes a total of 45 minutes. The first 25 minutes is for a health history questionnaire and a screening interview afterwards. The next 10 minutes is the actual blood extraction process, where you will be attached to a machine that will withdraw 1 pint of blood. The final 10 minutes is utilized for the donor to relax. It is important to not do any strenuous activity after donating until the next day.

Donating blood has many benefits for the donors. They receive a t-shirt, a voucher from either ShopRite or Exxon-Mobil, and they are entered into a raffle to win Gold Bar VIP Katy Perry concert tickets at the Prudential Center.

Donating is a great opportunity to save lives, get some free giveaways, and enjoy some refreshments. The process takes only 45 minutes to save 3 lives! Once again, all questions regarding this event should be directed to BASE at
